The Summer Camp & High School Bridge Program is the centerpiece of the Math Corps. This six-week program serves a total of approximately 400 middle and high school students. Using a “kids teaching kids” model, the high school students serve as teaching assistants for the younger students. About fifty college students, most of whom are often former Math Corps kids themselves, work as instructors and mentors. The students are broken into teams with each team having ten middle school students, five high school teaching assistants (TA’s) and one college student (CI) at the head. The CI’s and TA’s not only serve as teachers and role models for the middle school kids, but as essentially “big brothers” and “big sisters”. Students receive math instruction in both the basics and advanced topics, while being immersed in a culture of support and achievement.
Most importantly, the Math Corps offers students a vision of the world that begins with the message of “Be Yourself!” – as there is greatness within – and then builds a sense of family and community that is based on the values of kindness and integrity, that espouses the power of courage and that asks no less of middle and high school kids than to change the world. As a “lifetime” program, where students return year after year from seventh grade through college, the Math Corps is a social system, complete with its own culture and serving as a force for change in the city of Detroit.
For a student to be eligible, he/she must be entering the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade in the Fall and must be either
- A Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park resident, currently enrolled in a public school (charter schools included) anywhere in Michigan
- Currently enrolled in a public school (charter schools included) in the city of Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park
Applications will be typically be accepted until the end of February (specific dates will be announced every year) or until all spots are filled. Returning Math Corps students will receive priority consideration provided their application is received at least a couple of weeks before the general due date.
Selected students will be notified by the end of April.
