Chess Master James Canty III – An Inspiration for Math Corps Students

For over eight years, Math Corps has been proud to welcome James Canty III, a professional chess player and Detroit native, to our summer camp. James, a rising star in the chess world, isn’t just teaching our students about the game; he’s showing them how passion, hard work, and dedication can turn a hobby into a career that takes you around the world.

James’ journey began in his childhood, playing chess with his father at home. What started as a father-son pastime became a passion that would change his life. Determined to master the game, James dove headfirst into the world of competitive chess. He rose through the ranks, becoming a nationally recognized player and earning the prestigious title of FIDE Master. Today, he travels globally, competing in high-level tournaments, coaching chess enthusiasts, and earning a living from playing chess.

Each summer, James plays against dozens of Math Corps students simultaneously, showcasing not just his skill but his generosity in sharing his knowledge. He inspires our students, teaching them critical thinking, patience, and resilience—qualities that extend far beyond the chessboard. When asked why he continues to return to Math Corps each year, James shared, “Math Corps feels like home. The energy, the kids, the sense of community—it’s something special. I come back because I want to be a part of that magic.”

James’ influence extends far beyond our camp. With over 114,000 followers on Instagram, 61,000 on Twitch, and 32,000 on YouTube, he shares his love for chess with a global audience. Through live streams, tutorials, and motivational content, James connects with young chess enthusiasts around the world, inspiring them to chase their dreams.

James Canty III is a living example of the power of determination. Through chess, he has transformed his life, and every summer, he helps our students see that they, too, can turn their passions into success stories. We’re incredibly lucky to have him as part of the Math Corps family, and we look forward to many more summers of chess, mentorship, and inspiration.
